Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass PJ — Legendary Fender Tone, Modern Playability

The Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass PJ in Olympic White is a gateway into the Fender family, pairing the iconic P Bass silhouette with the tonal range of a PJ pickup layout. A thin poplar body and slim "C"-shaped maple neck make it comfortable for long sessions. The Olympic White finish and 3-ply black pickguard give it a clean look on any stage. Built for aspiring bassists, the Affinity PJ delivers quintessential Fender tone with player-friendly refinements. The instrument ships ready to play and offers a clear upgrade path for players who later want to swap pickups or hardware.

What Sets the Affinity PJ Apart

The hybrid pickup configuration is the headline: a ceramic split single-coil P Bass neck pickup delivers fat, punchy low end, while a ceramic single-coil Jazz Bass bridge pickup adds brightness and growl for slap, rock, and modern styles. Vintage-style open-gear tuning machines and a 4-saddle bridge complete the classic Fender aesthetic.

Poplar Body Built for Comfort and Tone

Poplar is a lightweight tonewood that keeps the instrument comfortable during long sets while delivering the focused midrange that defines the Precision Bass sound. A gloss polyurethane finish protects the wood and gives the Olympic White paint its polished sheen.

• Body Material: Poplar — lightweight tonewood that keeps the instrument balanced for hours of playing comfort
• Body Finish: Gloss Polyurethane — durable polished sheen that resists everyday wear
• Construction: Bolt-On — solid neck-to-body joint with traditional Fender snap and sustain

Slim "C" Neck Profile for Effortless Fretting

The Affinity PJ uses a bolt-on maple neck with a slim "C" profile and a satin urethane back finish that feels smooth and fast under the thumb. Its maple fingerboard has a 241 mm radius suited to both chording and single-note runs, while 20 medium-jumbo frets give plenty of room for upper-register playing.

• Neck Material: Maple — bright tonal character with strong attack that cuts through a dense mix
• Neck Shape: "C" Profile — slim and comfortable for smaller hands and fast position shifts
• Scale Length: 864 mm — full standard P Bass scale for proper string tension and feel

PJ Pickup Configuration and Vintage-Style Hardware

A ceramic split single-coil P Bass neck pickup sits in the middle for fat, hum-cancelling tone, while a ceramic single-coil Jazz Bass bridge pickup adds snap and articulation. The passive circuit with volume-per-pickup and master tone keeps the signal path simple and reliable, with no batteries required.

• Pickup Configuration: PJ — split single-coil P Bass neck + single-coil Jazz Bass bridge
• Neck Pickup: Ceramic Split Single-Coil — fat, punchy low end with hum-cancelling design
• Bridge Pickup: Ceramic Single-Coil Jazz Bass® — bright, articulate top-end for slap and rock

Ideal for Beginners, Gigging Bassists, and Backup-Bass Buyers

The Affinity PJ is the right choice for first-time bass players who want a playable, great-sounding instrument out of the box. Its slim "C" neck profile and lightweight poplar body make it approachable for younger players and adults alike, while the PJ pickup layout offers enough tonal range to keep the instrument interesting as skills develop. Gigging bassists will appreciate the reliable hardware and the option to use it as a dependable backup on the road without risking a more expensive instrument. Players moving up from a starter pack will find this model a solid step that still respects a sensible budget.

The PJ Bass Concept: A 1970s Mod That Became a Fender Staple

The PJ pickup layout — a P Bass split-coil in the neck paired with a Jazz Bass single-coil in the bridge — began as a custom modification by bass players and luthiers in the 1970s. Rob Grange, who played bass for Ted Nugent, was one of the earliest known users of the concept. Fender began offering PJ basses officially in 1984, and the configuration became widely popular after Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses was photographed with one in 1986 and went on to use it on Appetite for Destruction.
